It was made an independently owned insurance company in 1991 and was purchased in 1996 by the General Accident company. Following this, GA merged with Commercial Union to form CGU and again with Norwich Union to form CGNU. This has now become a part of the Aviva group. Sabre provide insurance for private cars but also create a lot of their business from the insurance of non standard vehicles such as taxis. Their private car insurance policies are aimed at drivers with no or a low no-claims bonus. They also provide cover for drivers with a history of accidents and convictions. Consequently, they insure a large number of younger drivers and drivers who might otherwise struggle to afford insurance from other companies.
